Capstone Design Step 2
During this step, we generated 3 possible design concepts. First, we determined 4 possible sub-functions of our product. Then, for each sub-function, we came up with 5 possible alternative solutions. Finally, we combined these solutions in different ways to come up with 3 possible design concepts. We created concept sketches of each one to firm up the ideas.

Below is our classification scheme:
Concept 1:
This product soaks up the oil with a bacteria-infused sponge. The sponge is dragged around the ocean by a drone to prevent machinery malfunctions. We would also make the sponge out of eco-friendly materials. |
Concept 2:
This product works like a skimming device to gather oil from the surface of the water, but since it is a sponge, it soaks up oil as well. The sponge is dragged by a boat, similar to a skimmer. The bacteria would be in the sponge, and the sponge would be made of reusable materials. |
Concept 3:
In this product, some of the bacteria will come off the sponge and go into the water to eat the oil, while the sponge also soaks up the oil. It will be dropped off by a boat and left in the water until it is picked up again. We will make it out of biodegradable materials. |
We have chosen to use Concept 1 with some alterations, such as the method of delivery (boat instead of drone).
Reflection
One thing that went very well during this project was the creation of the classification scheme. After we figured out our criteria, we were easily able to come up with five alternatives for each. We were also able to easily group these ideas into three solid concepts. Another thing that went well was our sketching. We had done conceptual sketches before, so we were familiar with the idea, and we got them done quickly.
One thing that did not go as well was our initial brainstorming. We were confused about the meaning of "subfunctions" in this context, so we were not able to quickly come up with criteria. Another thing that did not go as well was time management. We had very little time to complete our sketches. However, we did get everything done in time.
During this step, I learned how to create a classification scheme and how to effectively brainstorm.
